The Salvador Rosa Section of the Carnarvon National Park is a brilliant 4WD destination but you will need at least 2 to 3 days to properly explore the area. Spyglass Peak and The Sentinel, sculpted by millions of years of weathering, dominate the skyline. With extensive wildlife the area is an attractive spot for birdwatching along the river and springs. Clearly the big feature of the park is the many freshwater springs flowing into the Nogoa River system. There are some really incredible rock formations to be visited including the Spyglass and the Mitchell Springs.

Come prepared to this beautiful countryside, there are no shops close by. The 4WD visitor must be pretty much self sufficient. To get to Salvador Rosa head onto the Springsure to Tambo Road and turn off about 115km from Springsure - or 131km from Tambo. The turn off is well indicated. Alternatively, if you are coming from Tambo, follow the old Springsure road which is a bit shorter and leads right into the park. The black, rainforest type soils of the area become impassable mud during the wet season. Always inform yourself of the current conditions. The main challenge to the 4WD visitor is the Nogoa River crossing. Usually it is not very deep - but as everywhere you go - check the crossing out before you drive into it.

We recommend you visit from April to September to avoid the wet and humid time of the year. The cost of visiting is 0 and no permits are required for access. There is a single camping site on the banks of the Nogoa river. Bring your own firewood as collection of firewood is prohibited throughout the Carnarvon National park. The camping facilities include toilets and you will be able to reach them with your 4WD trailer - unless it is the wet season anyway.
