The Barrington Tops National park is no longer reachable by any vehicle. The Barrington Tops state forest however is an incredible 4WD destination high up on the plateau north of the National Park. The State forest boast excellent facilities and plenty of camping spots for the 4WD adventurer and the area is a preferred weekend destination for Newcastle locals. Once of the best camping spots is on the Cobark River which also is among the ones with the best facilities. Polblue camping area is also particularly popular amongst 4WD fans.
The scenery is particularly spectacular and there is an abundance of 4WD tracks you can explore. The area is particularly popular during hot summer days because the high plateau is much cooler and offers relief. However in winter it is not uncommon to find a bit of snow up here. Even when visiting in summer you should come prepared for a possible cold spell and pack some good cold weather gear into your 4WD. Top up on fuel too to get you through your 4WD weekend.
There is plenty of wildlife in the area including the elusive platypus. Plenty of trout if you are into fishing. Visit anytime except winter since it gets too cold and also it gets too wet and the popular 4WD tracks get closed down. There is a seasonal shut down of the 4WD tracks (normally from June to September) however this seems to depend on the weather and local conditions, therefore inform yourself locally before heading off. The area is best accessed from Taree to Gloucester from where the access is clearly indicated.
