The area between Tenterfield, Grafton and Casino contains a number of fine four wheel driving tracks and camping is usually permitted along those 4WD tracks. The Gibraltar Range is clearly the finest 4WD adventure spots in the area and a great weekend 4Wd destination.
During dry weather the road conditions are usually good enought to bring along your offroad camper trailer into the area but you need to check the weather situation before heading off. The area has heavy clay soil which gets very slippery when heavy rains set in.
The best approach to this fantastic 4WD destination is via the Bruxner Highway turning off between Casino and Tenterfield. You can also access it from the Graften side turning off the Summerland highway.
Bring enough supplies as there are no shopping facilities at the 2 official camp grounds. One is a former forestry camp - the Ewingar Forest camp and the other is the Washpool NP rest area. There are no camping fees and both camping grounds offer the 4WD enthusiast toilets and BBQ facilities.
4WD visitors regularly report fallen trees and logs blocking the 4WD paths. Particularly after heavy rainfall, branches blocking the 4WD tracks are a regular occurrence. It is a great idea to bring a tool like an ax to be able to clear the path in front of you. happy 4WDriving!!
