Don't miss out on the number one 4WD Island in Australia - Fraser Island is 4WD territory. In fact you need a 4WD to get around as there are no sealed roads and all the roads criss crossing the island are sand. No dirt, just sand as Fraser Island is the largest sand Island in the world. Remember to seriously lower your tire pressure!
The main "highway" on Fraser Island is seventy five mile beach - but you need to time your passing according to the tides. Fraser Island is not far off the beaten track but it demands some preparations. Remember to bring all of your supplies from water to food to firewood if you want to have a camp fire. There is no shopping center and what you can pick up is expensive.
Before you go you need to get your vehicle access permit from one of the local offices or the ferry services you use to cross over to Fraser Island. Don't miss out on visiting and spending some time at one of the inland lakes - they are cristal clear with perfect sandy beaches.
I like to use the ferry from Inskip point in the South of the Island - but you cannot access it with a 4WD rental vehicle.
